NUS Wind Symphony Concert & Ktv

March 26, 2006

friday. joined weng kin and shuying at the university cultural centre to watch the nus wind symphony concert titled inTempo 2006 accelarando as part of the nus arts festival r&r 2006. daniel got us tickets, and his parents too, for seats that were relatively far away from the stage, as a result we couldn’t see daniel until the lights came on and their first piece began. but me knowing him for like hmm.. 7 years? since sec 3.. how could i not recognise his qian bian face from afar lol. daniel will always be my talent soloist on his tenor sax, but sadly, no solo parts tat night.

before the intermission, the symphony’s special guest mr. fredi sonderegger did a fantastic job on his trombone!! OMG seriously, never have i in my entire life heard someone play with so much emotions and energy and he, having performed with groups like la fenice and concerto vocale which are 2 of the greatest orchestras around, i thought hey man, this guy can really do his thing! he’s currently in the SSO as their associate professor trombone. he performed with the symphony on the piece with several movements - the colours of the trombone - red, orange and blah; couldn’t quite catch what the guy emcee said -_- but nevertheless good stuff!

dan: just one comment, the drummer in ponytail for 2nd half was terrible - so weak! mo sek fan isit? i prefer the other one who really did a great job on the drums a.k.a president to the ponytail.

saturday. was gu ma’s birthday but decided to join my office colleagues for ktv instead (at the expense of my gu ma’s famous yummy chicken curry!). joined david, jeff, stan, liwei, jiahao, kelvin, guojie, ah long & beng for a whole 3 hours singing and singing.. so much fun! haha. here are some of my comments:

david has a voice stretchable to reach high notes but lacks control. jeff can definitely sing but needs to be more confident and sing into the mic! stanley a.k.a. honey has a very nice gentleman voice which has potential to develop further - in fact other than guojie, i think he has one of the best speaking voices around.. YES IT’S TRUE! liwei is forever trying to reach unreachable notes lol but good job! he can handle fast numbers that i never can.. jiahao, the quiet and reserved individual who’s probably shy to sing into the mic, impressed me with his tenor voice and song classics he has chosen; given good training, his voice can develop. sitting next to me was kelvin, who has a baritone colour similar to andy lau’s if he sings lower.. better control than liwei. guojie again i must emphasise he has a super nice manly voice, just that his pitch was heywire and his range is limited. much much more training is desired. ah long is a hidden talent and sounds quite like me when he sings on the lower notes. ah beng’s voice is crisp and clear but lacks velocity and vocal strength otherwise he too can develop any song well. as for me, i think my vocals have improved over the past few years but i definitely got to work a lil’ more on pitch..

songs i sang during ktv (i need this for my musical reasons haha):

take me to your heart.
we belong together.
the return of the condor heroes (chin & canto)
when you say you love me. geez it’s a challenge to sing this!

we were all hungry after ktv and went for roti prata at a nearby coffee house. ordered for myself 2 gosong, 1 egg and a honeydrew juice, thereafter we were on our separate ways home.. i had a great time :D

i’ll post some pics here soon.. very lazy to upload from hp to laptop now lol
